Curing Fiber

I learned how to cure alpaca fiber.  I had fun experimenting. Now I want to learn how to put sparkles in the fiber.

You will need:

  • 4 cup water
  • 1 tsp citric acid
  • 2 1/2 cup washed fiber
  • 1 pkg kool-aid (or more depending on color)

Steam water (don’t boil!), pour in kool-aid and citric acid and stir. Place fiber in push down and simmer for 30 min or till water is clear. Strain, DO NOT PUSH DOWN!– you do not want to felt it. Let dry on rack.

Sledding

AndreasmileWe went sledding today at the park.  We had lots of fun.

The snow was light and fluffy so it all went into our faces or over us depending on how tall we are.  We ended up going down backwards or covering our faces so we did not get so much snow on our faces.  Because it was COLD!

I hope it keeps snowing so we can play outside in the snow and make snowmen and forts.

Great Grandma’s Pizzelles

pizzelleMy great grandma Bea used to make Pizzelles and share them with us.  She would make a bunch and store them in a tin coffee can.

Grandpa loaned me great Grandma’s pizzelle maker. I made some cookies and ice cream cones.

Here is the recipe:

  • 3 large eggs (optional: 4 eggs for a thinner batter)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla (anise, almond extract or another flavor you like)
  • 1/2 cup butter melted and cooled
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup cocoa (if you want chocolate cookies.  Might need 1/4 cup extra sugar)
  • Finely chopped nuts (optional)

Beat eggs and sugar until light yellow.  Add butter and vanilla, beat until blended.  Sift together flour and baking powder (and cocoa).  Fold into butter mixture.  If using nuts, sprinkle on top of dough before closing iron.

Optional:  Use orange peel or extract instead of vanilla and add 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips to batter before baking.

Bake on pizzelle iron as directed.
